The source, publication date, location, event description, numerical interpretation, and conclusion should be examined individually. Only after these elements have been checked should the material be described as verified, partially verified, contradicted, or still unconfirmed.

Define the Exact Claim Before Checking the Evidence

Statistics are often repeated long before readers see the report they came from. Instead of comparing headlines or social media posts, trace the figure back to the original dataset or official report.
First, identify who collected or published the data. Reliable sources usually explain what was measured, how the data was collected, and when it was last updated. Without this information, the number should be treated as a claim rather than verified evidence.
Next, compare the methodology before comparing the figures.
